INDIANS DROWN MOSLEY DOLPHINS

Choctaw Boys Get Win Over Crestview
Maybe all the Choctawhatchee basketball team really needed was to get Matt Williams to the free throw line. On Tuesday, Williams helped save the homestanding Indians from a near meltdown by draining a rare two free throws that helped turn back charging Crestview in a 65-55 victory. Choctaw appeared to have the game well in hand after taking a 48-33 lead into the fourth quarter. But a combination of Indians’ turnovers and missed free throws allowed the Bulldogs to race back to within 57-53 with 1:40 left.
Even with Williams’ pair, Choctaw was only 7-of-17 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter and 11-of-29 for the game. Williams seemed to spark the Indians after sinking his freebies, as Kadeem White followed with a steal and fed Freddie Gray for an easy basket to help sew up the win. “We’ve got to hit free throws. That’s the bottom line,” Choctaw coach Marc Tisza said. Choctaw’s trapping defense and hot 3-point shooting helped the Indians enter halftime with a 34-23 lead. Jesse Adams sank a trio of 3-pointers before intermission and finished with four. “We played really aggressive, especially in the latter part of the second quarter,” Tisza said. “ … I really like what I see out of my kids with their energy and effort on defense right now. Things are starting to click.” Tyler Tisza led Choctaw with 15 points, and Williams and Adams added 12 apiece.
The Indians (10-10) travel to Mosley on Thursday for an afternoon tilt, the wrap up the season at home on Friday with Senior Night against Tate.
EAGLES EDGE INDIANS
NICEVILLE — Facing a hostile crowd and a surging Niceville team, the Choctawhatchee boys basketball team could have folded. Instead, the Indians answered with a surge of their own and made the Eagles use almost all 32 minutes to seal their win. In the end, the resilient Indians came up short, as the Eagles pulled out an 85-70 victory on Friday night. Hunter Curtis knocked down four 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 17 points, Steve Dyson added 16 and Kirk Perry chipped in with 15 for Niceville (21-3), which had trouble putting the Indians (9-10) away at several points during the game, as Choctaw showed plenty of moxie. The Indians trailed by just three points at halftime before Niceville got a much-needed boost from its bench.
The start of the fourth quarter signaled a turning point for both teams. Niceville started the fourth with a 9-0 run as Koszuta added seven more points off the bench, and Matt Cooper buried a big 3-pointer to put the Eagles up 55-41. “That run to start the fourth quarter really hurt us,” Choctaw coach Marc Tisza said. “We answered them, but that just shows how good this Niceville team is.”
The Tribe has 3 games this week to close out the regular season; Tuesday Feb. 1 at home against Crestview, an afternoon doubleheader at Mosley on Thursday and Senior Night hosting Tate on Friday.

Eagles edge Indians in a Nailbiter 57-50
Finishing touches don’t get much better than the one Niceville’s Kody Williams delivered when he threw down a thunderous, crowd-pleasing dunk on a Choctawhatchee defender with four seconds left.
The Indians gave visiting Niceville all it could handle before a big 3-pointer from Kyle Koszuta, several clutch free throws from Steve Dyson and a handful of late steals propelled the Eagles to a 57-50 victory over their county rival.
The game was tight throughout as the first half saw eight lead changes and seven ties before Choctaw (7-6) held a 29-27 advantage at halftime. When Kadeem White, who led Choctaw with 14 points, swished a 3-pointer in the third quarter, the Indians led by five but Niceville (17-2) closed the gap to 37-36 heading into the fourth.
Through three quarters, Niceville had only hit one 3-pointer and that came compliments of Koszuta. With Choctaw leading 47-45 with 3:02 left after White found Jesse Adams for a layup, Koszuta got an excellent look from behind the arc on the left wing. He coolly stroked the shot and Niceville never trailed again.
Still, the final outcome was always in doubt. Choctaw trailed 50-48 with 50.9 seconds left, but Williams fired to Dyson for an easy layup after the Indians were scrambling to try to take the ball.
Dyson was huge for Niceville from the free throw line in the last period, sinking all six of his attempts. He scored 14 points and Williams had a game-high 16, none more impressive than when he stole the ball with less than 10 seconds left and rose high to dunk over a Choctaw player.
The Indians, who had done a sound job of taking care of the ball through three quarters, struggled with turnovers in the fourth. They had four inside the last 2:30.
Adams sank three 3-pointers in tallying 11 points, and both he and Rashad Thompson canned two trifectas each in the first half to help Choctaw lead by intermission.
The Indians hit four of their six free throws in the fourth quarter, but they were only 3-of-12 before that, which came back to bite them in the end. Niceville wasn’t outstanding from the charity stripe but did hit 15 of its 24 attempts.
